1. Plain-English summary
Our website uses a small number of cookies — most are essential for the site to work, a few help us understand which pages are useful, and none are sold to advertisers. You can disable any of them in your browser at any time.
We don't show ads, we don't use third-party tracking pixels, and we don't share your behaviour with data brokers. This page explains what we do collect and why.
2. What is a cookie?
A cookie is a small text file your browser stores when you visit a website. It lets the site remember you between page loads — so your cart doesn't empty itself when you click on a product, for example.
Some cookies disappear when you close your browser (“session”), others stay around for days, weeks, or months (“persistent”). Some are set by us directly (“first-party”), others by tools we use such as map embeds or fonts (“third-party”).
3. Cookies we use
3.1 Strictly necessary
These cookies are required for core site features. Disabling them will break things like the shopping cart, the login session for our admin portal, and form security (CSRF / reCAPTCHA).
- cart — remembers items in your shopping cart between visits. Persistent · 30 days.
- session— keeps you signed in to the MSE admin portal if you're a staff member. Session-only.
- theme — remembers your light/dark mode preference. Persistent · 365 days.
- recaptcha-token — Google reCAPTCHA verification on contact and chatbot forms. Session-only.
3.2 Performance & analytics
These cookies help us understand which pages and products are most useful to visitors so we can improve the site. We use Vercel Analytics and Vercel Speed Insights, which collect anonymized page-view and performance data. No personal information is recorded — IP addresses are hashed and discarded.
3.3 Third-party embeds
Some pages embed content from external services. These services may set their own cookies when their content loads:
- Google Maps — embedded on the Contact page to show our workshop location.
- Google Fonts — serves the Poppins typeface used across the site.
- Unsplash — image hosting for blog photography and gallery imagery (no cookies, but loads track requests).
4. What we don't use
To be clear, we do not use:
- Advertising cookies or remarketing pixels (no Meta Pixel, no Google Ads tracking)
- Cross-site behavioural tracking
- Cookies that share data with brokers or affiliates
- Fingerprinting techniques or canvas-based tracking
5. Managing cookies
You have full control over cookies in your browser:
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data
- Safari: Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data
- Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
- Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Cookies and site data
Disabling strictly-necessary cookies will break shopping cart, chatbot, and contact form. Disabling analytics cookies has no impact on functionality — we just lose insight into which pages are useful.
6. Do Not Track
We respect the spirit of the Do Not Track (DNT) signal but do not rely on it as a primary control because it's not consistently implemented across browsers. Our default analytics setup is already privacy-respecting (no personal data, no IP retention).
7. Updates to this policy
We'll update this page if we add or remove cookies, change analytics providers, or refine how we use cookies. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
8. Questions?
We're a small team and happy to answer specifics. If you're curious about exactly what we collect about you, drop us a note.
