How to choose a solar water heater for your home in Nepal
Start with daily hot water use, measured in litres per day (LPD). A practical rule is roughly 40 to 50 litres per person per day for bathing and washing. The ULTRASUN Copper Flat Plate 300 LPD, for example, is rated for around 8 to 10 people. Size up if you have a bathtub, several bathrooms on different floors or frequent guests.
Climate matters. Kathmandu winters bring cold mornings and occasional frost, and hill districts get colder still, so evacuated tube heaters are the usual choice there: the vacuum layer keeps heat in when the air is cold. In the Terai, winter fog can cut sunshine for days, so an electric backup heating rod is worth having. Flat plate collectors suit milder sites and buyers who want a sturdier collector with no glass tubes to replace.
- Family of 3 to 4: 180 to 240 LPD, for example 15 or 20 tubes
- Family of 5 to 7: 280 to 360 LPD, for example 20 to 30 tubes
- Large houses, hostels and hotels: 420 LPD and above, or several systems connected
- Low water pressure in upper bathrooms: consider a pressurized model or a booster arrangement
- Hard or bore-well water: choose an SUS-304 inner tank and replace the magnesium kit periodically
- Rooftop load: a full tank holds several hundred litres of water, so have the roof slab and stand position checked
Models compared: evacuated tube, Premium Plus, pressurized and flat plate
The ULTRASUN 5G Premium range uses 58x1800mm XL evacuated tubes with a three-layer AL+SS+CU absorber (96% absorbance, 97% transmittance) and an extra-thick SUS-304 inner tank. It runs from the 15-tube model rated at 180±10% LPD up to the 35-tube model at 420±10% LPD, with 1500W or 2500W electric backup.
The ULTRASUN 5G Premium Plus (+) models step up to longer 58x2100mm XXL tubes and a Ø500mm SUS-304 outer tank with 50mm polyurethane insulation. The longer tubes collect more heat per tube: the 20-tube Premium Plus is rated 280±10% LPD against 240±10% LPD for the 20-tube Premium. The ULTRASUN 5G Premium Plus heat tube pressurized models (25 and 30 tubes) are built for homes that need mains-style pressure at showers and mixers.
For flat plate systems, ULTRASUN offers aluminum and copper flat plate collectors in 300 LPD and 450 LPD sizes with toughened glass covers. We also stock value-priced evacuated tube systems from SUNTEC, SunUse, MICRO, ECO, SunGold and Pristine in 20, 25 and 30 tube sizes (240 to 360 LPD).
What makes one solar water heater cost more than another
The lowest prices in this category are spare parts, such as a single replacement tube, a heating rod, a magnesium kit or a PT valve. Among complete systems, price rises mainly with capacity and tube count: more tubes means more collector area and a bigger tank.
Beyond size, cost is driven by tube length (XL 1800mm vs XXL 2100mm), tank material and insulation thickness, the electric backup rating, and the collector type. Pressurized heat tube systems and copper flat plate collectors sit at the top of the range because they use more copper, stronger tanks and fittings rated for working pressure. Warranty also differs by brand: most ULTRASUN models carry a 10 or 15 year performance warranty, while some value brands list a shorter product warranty, so read the warranty line on each product page.
Installation, delivery and after-sales service
Mega Solar Energy installs solar water heaters with our own technicians. We check the roof, plan the stand angle and orientation for good sun exposure, connect the cold water feed and hot water line, and fit the electric backup rod where included. Delivery is available across Nepal, and we arrange installation outside Kathmandu Valley as well.
After installation we handle spare parts and servicing from the same catalog: replacement Premium and Premium Plus tubes, 1.5KW and 2.5KW heating rods, magnesium kits, PT valves and assistant tanks. Warranty terms follow the details listed on each product. If you are wondering about government support, ask us whether a current subsidy applies to your purchase.
Simple maintenance that keeps output high
Wipe dust off the tubes or glass cover every few months, more often in dusty areas and after the dry season. Flush the tank once or twice a year to remove sediment, especially with hard or bore-well water, and replace the magnesium kit when it wears down. If a tube cracks, replace it promptly; the rest of the system keeps working, but output drops until it is fixed.
Frequently asked questions
What is the price of a solar water heater in Nepal?+
At Mega Solar Energy, listings range from Rs. 1,800 to Rs. 2,37,500. The lower end is spare parts like tubes and heating rods. Complete household systems begin with 20-tube, 240 LPD evacuated tube models, while pressurized and copper flat plate systems for large homes and hotels sit at the top. Installation charges depend on site and location.
Which size solar water heater do I need for my family?+
Plan for about 40 to 50 litres of hot water per person per day. A family of three or four is usually well served by 180 to 240 LPD, which is a 15 or 20 tube system. Five to seven people should look at 280 to 360 LPD. Tell us your bathrooms and usage and we will recommend a size.
Does a solar water heater work in Kathmandu winters and on foggy days?+
Evacuated tube heaters keep producing warm water on cold, clear winter days because the vacuum layer limits heat loss. On long cloudy or foggy spells, especially in the Terai, solar output drops, which is why most of our ULTRASUN systems include an electric heating rod as backup.
What is the difference between pressurized and non-pressurized solar heaters?+
Non-pressurized systems use gravity from a rooftop tank and suit most Nepali homes with an overhead water tank. Pressurized models, such as the ULTRASUN 5G Premium Plus heat tube pressurized range, give stronger flow at showers and mixer taps, and suit homes or hotels that already use pressure pumps.
What warranty comes with your solar water heaters?+
Warranty depends on the model. Most ULTRASUN 5G systems list a 15 year performance warranty and some list 10 years. Other brands such as SUNTEC and SunUse list a 10 year performance warranty, and some include a separate product warranty. Each product page shows its exact warranty terms.
Do you deliver and install solar water heaters outside Kathmandu?+
Yes. Mega Solar Energy delivers across Nepal and arranges installation outside Kathmandu Valley too. Share your location, roof type and household size, and we will confirm the model, delivery timeline and installation cost before you order.
How do I maintain a solar water heater?+
Clean the tubes or glass cover every few months, flush the tank once or twice a year to clear sediment, and replace the magnesium kit when it is used up, especially with hard water. Replace any cracked tube quickly. We stock tubes, heating rods, magnesium kits and PT valves.
