How to Choose a Solar Panel in Nepal
Start with the job the panel has to do. Small 12V panels (20W to 150W) charge one battery through a charge controller and suit lights, a TV or a phone charger in a village home, shop or farm shed. Rooftop systems that run a whole house, or feed an inverter or the grid, use 24V-class panels of 335W and above, wired in strings.
To size a system, add up the daily watt-hours of the loads you want to run. Divide that by the usable sun hours at your site, then allow some extra for losses and cloudy days. In practice, a typical Kathmandu house that wants lights, fans, a TV, a fridge and Wi-Fi during the day usually needs several of the larger panels, not one or two small ones. We can do this calculation for you from your appliance list.
- Watt rating: higher wattage means fewer panels, less roof space and fewer mounting points for the same output.
- Mono vs poly: nearly all our listed panels are monocrystalline, which gives more power per square metre than older polycrystalline panels. That matters on small Kathmandu rooftops.
- Mono PERC and half-cell: many buyers search for 'mono PERC'. Our listings state monocrystalline, half-cell or bifacial technology, so ask us for the datasheet if you need the exact cell type of a model.
- Roof orientation: in Nepal, panels should face south, tilted at roughly the site latitude (about 27–28° around Kathmandu). Keep them clear of shade from water tanks, parapets and neighbouring buildings.
- Grid connection: NEA allows net metering for grid-tied rooftop systems that meet its rules. That needs a compatible inverter and an application to NEA, and we can explain the steps when you plan the system.
Solar Panel Models Compared: 20W to 625W
The small ULTRA and ULTRA QUALITY mono modules (20W, 50W, 80W, 100W and 150W) are 36-cell, 12V DC panels for battery charging and off-grid lighting. The 100W module measures about 810 × 710 × 30 mm, and the 150W is about 1480 × 670 × 35 mm, so both are easy to mount on a small roof or pole.
For mid-size systems there are two 335W options: the ULTRA 335W mono module (model QS 150-36MC) and the QXPV SL335TU-36P, a 24V-class panel weighing 22.5 kg. Ultrasun ERA offers a 410W module in two versions. The ERA-54HC is a standard monocrystalline panel, and the ERA-54HCB is bifacial and also collects reflected light from the rear. Both measure 1722 x 1133 x 35 mm.
Most larger rooftop and commercial projects use the high-wattage panels. The ULTRASUN 550W (ERA-72HC550M) is a monocrystalline half-cell bifacial module with 70% bifaciality and a 26.5 kg weight, certified to IEC 61215:2021. The Ultrasun ERA 610W (ERA-66HC) and ULTRASUN 625W (ERA-RC-66HC625M) are monocrystalline modules rated for 1500V DC systems, built for large arrays where fewer panels reduce wiring and mounting costs.
What Affects Solar Panel Prices in Nepal
The gap between Rs. 2,040 and Rs. 28,475 in our catalog comes mostly from wattage. A 20W panel uses a few cells and a small frame, while a 610W or 625W panel is more than two metres long and contains far more silicon. When you compare panels, look at price per watt as well as the price of each panel. The large modules usually cost less per watt, but they need proper mounting structures and an inverter that matches them.
- Power rating and physical size (20W up to 625W).
- Cell technology: standard mono, half-cell and bifacial modules are priced differently.
- System voltage class: 12V battery-charging panels compared with 24V-class panels rated for 1000V or 1500V DC strings.
- Stated warranty: some models list a 20-year warranty, while the Ultrasun ERA 410W (ERA-54HC) and the ULTRA 50W list 25 years.
- Prices shown are for the panel only. Mounting structure, cables, inverter or charge controller and labour are quoted separately.
Installation and After-Sales Support from Mega Solar Energy
Our technicians check the site, then install the mounting structure, wire the panels to the correct string voltage and connect them to your charge controller, hybrid inverter or grid-tied system. We deliver panels across Nepal, from the Kathmandu Valley to Terai and hill districts, and we arrange installation outside the valley by appointment.
Warranty follows the terms in each product's specifications, which are listed on the product page. After installation, we can advise on cleaning and periodic checks so the panels keep producing close to their rated output.
Frequently asked questions
What is the price of solar panels in Nepal?+
At Mega Solar Energy, solar panels range from Rs. 2,040 for a small 20W module to Rs. 28,475 for the largest rooftop panels. Price depends mainly on wattage, cell technology and size. Larger panels usually cost less per watt, but they need proper mounting structures and an inverter that matches them.
What is the price of a 550W solar panel in Nepal?+
We stock the ULTRASUN 550W (ERA-72HC550M), a monocrystalline half-cell bifacial panel with 70% bifaciality, rated for 1500V DC systems. The current price is shown in the table above and on the product page. Call us for a quote that includes mounting, inverter and installation.
How many solar panels do I need for my house?+
It depends on how much electricity you use each day and on whether the system will run with batteries, with the grid or both. Add up the watt-hours of your appliances, or share your NEA bill, and we will work out the number and wattage of panels for your roof.
Are monocrystalline panels better than polycrystalline in Nepal?+
Monocrystalline panels produce more power from the same roof area, which helps on the small rooftops common in Kathmandu and other cities. Nearly all panels in our current range are monocrystalline, and some larger ULTRASUN models add half-cell or bifacial technology for extra output.
What warranty do your solar panels have?+
Warranty depends on the model and is listed in each product's specifications. For example, several ULTRA and Ultrasun ERA panels list 20 years, and the Ultrasun ERA 410W (ERA-54HC) and ULTRA 50W list 25 years. Ask us to confirm the terms for the model you choose before you buy.
Do you deliver and install solar panels outside Kathmandu?+
Yes. We deliver solar panels across Nepal and install complete systems outside the Kathmandu Valley by appointment. Delivery and installation charges depend on location and system size, so contact us with your district and requirement for a quote.
How do I maintain solar panels?+
Clean the glass with water and a soft cloth every few weeks, more often in dusty areas or after the monsoon. Keep the panels free of shade, and check that cables and connectors are tight. Avoid harsh chemicals and high-pressure jets on the surface.
