How to Choose an Inverter and Battery in Nepal

Load-shedding is rarer than it once was, but outages, voltage drops and unstable supply are still common in many parts of Nepal, especially outside the cities. A good backup system starts with two numbers: the total watts of the appliances you want to run at the same time, and how many hours they must run.

Size the inverter's VA rating comfortably above your running load. Motors such as fridges, pumps and fans draw a surge when they start. Then size the battery bank for backup time. Usable energy is roughly battery voltage × Ah, less losses. A 12V 150Ah battery stores about 1,800 Wh, so it can run a 300W load (lights, fans, TV and router) for a few hours. Larger inverters use 24V, 36V or 48V battery banks, which means two, three or four 12V batteries in series.

• Pure sine wave: nearly every inverter and UPS in our range lists pure sine wave output, which is safer for computers, TVs, LED drivers and fridges than modified square-wave output.

• Type: a standard inverter costs less than a solar hybrid with a built-in solar charger, and an online double-conversion UPS costs the most.
• Battery voltage: 12V units need one battery, while 48V, 180V, 192V and 384V systems need large battery banks.
• Battery Ah rating: a 23Ah battery is a fraction of the price of a 200Ah battery.
• Stated warranty: inverters typically list 1 year (the ULTRATEC 20 KVA lists 2 years), and most I-Volt solar tubular batteries list 36 months.
