How to choose a heat pump water heater in Nepal
A heat pump works like an air conditioner in reverse: a compressor and refrigerant move heat from outdoor air into water. Because it moves heat instead of making it, it delivers several units of heat for each unit of electricity. Our ULTRA 5KW domestic unit, for example, gives 5000W of heat output from 1210W of input power, around four times what a plain electric element would give for the same electricity.
A heat pump makes more sense than solar when you need hot water every hour regardless of weather, when roof space is limited or shaded, or when demand is high and concentrated in the morning and evening, as in hotels and hostels. It also suits the Terai and valley areas where winter fog can block the sun for days. Many buildings pair both: solar for daytime gain and a heat pump for reliable top-up.
- Size by hot water output per hour (L/h), not just kW: match it to peak demand such as morning showers
- Check your supply: our 5KW, 7KW and 10KW units run on single-phase 220V; the 18KW, 36KW and pool models need 380V three-phase
- Check the operating range: listed models work down to -7°C ambient, which covers most of Nepal outside the high mountains
- Leave open space around the outdoor unit for airflow, and consider noise near bedrooms
- For pools, size by pool volume and how warm you want the water, and confirm the water flow rate of your filtration pump
Domestic, commercial and swimming pool models compared
For homes, the ULTRA Heat Pump Water Heater 1.8KW is an all-in-one unit with an integrated 200L tank, 2000W auxiliary heater and a maximum water temperature of 70°C. The ULTRA 5KW and 7KW domestic units are air-to-water heat pumps producing 107L/h and 150L/h of hot water at a rated 55°C, suited to bathrooms, kitchens and whole-house use.
For commercial buildings, the 10KW unit (JDLKFXRS-10I/S2H) produces 215L/h on a 220V supply, the 18KW unit (UDLKFXRS-18II/S2) produces 390L/h, and the 36KW unit produces 780L/h on three-phase power. A 25KW commercial model fills the gap between them for hotels, hospitals and hostels that need continuous operation.
The ULTRA Swimming Pool heat pump is rated at 20KW heating and 12.8KW cooling with a rated COP of 6.35, so it can keep pool water comfortable well beyond the summer months for hotels, resorts and private pools.
What drives heat pump price in Nepal
Price rises mainly with heating capacity. The domestic 5KW model sits at the low end, while the 36KW commercial unit sits at the top because it has larger compressors, heat exchangers and three-phase electrics to deliver several times the hourly hot water output.
Other factors are whether a storage tank is built in (as on the 1.8KW 200L model), the refrigerant and compressor design, maximum water temperature, noise level, and special functions such as the heating and cooling modes on the pool heat pump. Installation cost depends on piping runs, tank size, electrical work and whether a three-phase connection is already available.
Running cost compared with an electric geyser
A standard electric geyser turns each unit of electricity into roughly one unit of heat. Based on the listed input and output figures, our domestic and commercial heat pumps deliver about four units of heat per unit of electricity under rated conditions, and the pool model lists a COP of 6.35. Actual savings depend on air temperature, water temperature setting and daily use, so ask us for an estimate based on your consumption.
Installation and after-sales from Mega Solar Energy
Our team surveys the site, recommends a capacity, plans the outdoor unit position, piping and storage tank, and coordinates electrical requirements before installation. We deliver and install across Nepal, including hotels and resorts outside Kathmandu Valley.
After handover we provide servicing and troubleshooting. Warranty terms are confirmed for each model at the time of purchase. Routine care is simple: keep the air coil clear of dust and leaves, keep the area around the unit open, and have the system checked periodically, particularly on commercial units running long hours.
Frequently asked questions
What is the heat pump price in Nepal?+
At Mega Solar Energy, heat pump water heaters range from Rs. 1,60,000 to Rs. 7,35,000. The 5KW and 7KW domestic units are at the lower end, commercial units from 10KW to 36KW are higher, and the 20KW swimming pool heat pump sits in between. Installation cost depends on site, piping and electrical work.
Is a heat pump better than a solar water heater?+
It depends on the building. Solar heats water at almost no running cost but drops during cloudy or foggy spells. A heat pump uses some electricity but gives steady hot water day and night. Hotels and buildings with limited roof space often prefer a heat pump, or combine both.
Which heat pump size do I need for a hotel?+
Estimate peak hot water use, mainly morning showers across all occupied rooms, and match it to hourly output. Our 10KW unit produces 215L/h, the 18KW 390L/h and the 36KW 780L/h. Share your room count and occupancy and we will size the heat pump and storage tank for you.
Do I need three-phase power for a heat pump?+
Not for every model. The 5KW and 7KW domestic units, the 1.8KW 200L tank model and the 10KW commercial unit run on single-phase 220V. The 18KW and 36KW commercial units and the 20KW pool heat pump require a 380V three-phase supply.
Does a heat pump work in Nepali winters?+
Yes. The listed models are rated to work in ambient temperatures down to -7°C, which covers Kathmandu, the Terai and most hill towns. Output and efficiency are lower on very cold days than in warm weather, so we size systems with winter demand in mind.
Can you install a heat pump outside Kathmandu?+
Yes. Mega Solar Energy delivers and installs heat pumps across Nepal, including for hotels and resorts in Pokhara, Chitwan and other districts. Send us the location, building type and hot water needs, and we will confirm the model, delivery and installation plan.
