How to Choose a Smart Door Lock in Nepal

Start with who needs to get in and how. A family home benefits from fingerprint access, so nobody hunts for keys, plus a passcode for guests or house staff. Offices and rented rooms are easier to manage with RFID cards, which can be handed out and taken back. Main gates and outer doors often use an electric rim lock that mounts on the surface of the door.

Also think about where the lock will be used. Outer doors and gates face rain, dust and direct sun, so ask us whether a model suits outdoor exposure or should be fitted on an inner door with a canopy. In apartments and offices with many users, choose a lock whose cards and passcodes are easy to add and remove, so ex-tenants or former staff lose access straight away.

  • Access method: fingerprint, passcode, RFID card or app. The A9 combines fingerprint, passcode and card, while the RFID Electric Lock is card-based and works with a mobile app.
  • Mortise type 5055 vs 6068: a mortise lock body sits inside a pocket cut into the door edge. The 5055 is the compact standard size for most residential doors, and the 6068 is a larger body. Measure your existing lock body, or let us check it, before choosing.
  • Door material and thickness: wooden, steel and aluminium-glass doors need different fitting. Confirm your door thickness with us so the lock and handles fit properly.
  • Power and backup: electronic locks need batteries or a power adaptor. Every model we list includes mechanical keys, so you can still open the door if the power runs out.
  • Rim or mortise: rim locks fit on the inside surface and need no deep cut in the door, which suits gates and older doors.

Smart Lock Models Compared

Electric Rim Lock: a double-cylinder electric rim lock with 1 adaptor and 3 keys included. It suits main doors and gates in homes and commercial buildings, and is often paired with a video door phone or access control system so the door can be released remotely.

RFID Electric Lock: uses a magnetic deadbolt and opens with RFID cards (2 included) or 3 mechanical keys, and is compatible with a mobile app. It is a practical choice for offices, rented flats and shared buildings where access changes often.

A9 Fingerprint Door Lock (5055 Mortise): fingerprint, passcode and RFID card access in the compact 5055 mortise format for standard doors, with 2 cards and 2 keys included.

A9 Fingerprint Door Lock (6068 Mortise): the same fingerprint, passcode and card access, built on the larger 6068 mortise body, with 2 cards and 2 keys included.

In short, choose the rim lock for gates and simple electric release, the RFID lock for shared spaces with changing users, and the A9 when you want keyless fingerprint entry at home. Pick the 5055 or 6068 version to match your door.

What Affects Smart Lock Prices

The entry point at Rs. 8,000 is the electric rim lock, which offers electric release with key backup. Prices rise to Rs. 17,000 with more access methods and a larger lock body.

  • Access methods: key-only electric release costs less than card access, and card access costs less than combined fingerprint, passcode and card.
  • Lock body: the 6068 mortise version of the A9 is priced above the 5055 version.
  • Connectivity: mobile app compatibility, as on the RFID Electric Lock, adds remote convenience.
  • Installation: fitting a mortise lock into a new or solid door takes more work than surface-mounting a rim lock. We quote installation separately.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of a smart door lock in Nepal?+

At Mega Solar Energy, smart door locks range from Rs. 8,000 for an electric rim lock to Rs. 17,000 for the A9 fingerprint door lock with the larger 6068 mortise. Installation is quoted separately, depending on your door type and location.

What is the difference between 5055 and 6068 mortise locks?+

The numbers refer to the size of the mortise lock body that fits inside the door edge. The 5055 is the compact size used on most standard residential doors, and the 6068 is a larger body. The right choice depends on your door, so measure the existing lock or ask us to check.

What happens if the battery runs out or a fingerprint does not work?+

All the smart locks we list include mechanical keys as a backup. The A9 fingerprint lock also accepts a passcode and RFID cards, so you have several ways in. Replace batteries when the lock gives a low-power warning, and keep a spare key somewhere safe.

Can a smart lock be fitted on my existing door?+

In most cases, yes. Wooden doors are the most common fit for mortise fingerprint locks, and rim locks fit on many doors and gates without deep cutting. Door thickness, material and the existing lock body all matter, so we check the door before installation.

Which lock is better for an office or rented rooms?+

The RFID Electric Lock suits offices and rentals because cards can be issued and withdrawn as people come and go, and it is mobile app compatible. For private homes, the A9 fingerprint lock removes the need to carry keys, and you can still use cards and passcodes.

Do you install smart door locks outside Kathmandu?+

Yes. We deliver smart locks across Nepal and install them outside the Kathmandu Valley by appointment. Charges depend on location and the number of doors, so send us your district and door details for a quote.
