How to Choose a Water Pump in Nepal
A pump is chosen by two numbers: head (how high it must push water, in metres) and flow (how much water per hour). As a rough guide, each storey of a Nepali house adds about 3 metres. Lifting water from an underground tank to an overhead tank on a four-storey building therefore needs around 12–15 metres of vertical head, plus extra for pipe length, bends and suction depth. Pick a pump whose rated head is above your total, not only its maximum head.
- Self-priming pumps (0.5–1 HP) suit homes that draw water from an underground tank or shallow source and fill an overhead tank. They handle the moderate heads typical of Kathmandu houses.
- Monoblock and centrifugal pumps move large volumes at low head. They are good for irrigation, ponds and moving water between tanks on level ground.
- Borewell submersible pumps sit inside the bore, so they work where the water level is too deep for a surface pump to draw it up. Check your bore diameter (our listed models fit 4-inch bores) and the water level, then choose a pump with enough stages and head.
- Open-well submersibles are for wells, ponds and sumps where the pump can sit under water.
- Solar pumps run directly from panels with no battery. For irrigation in the Terai, where land is flat and sunshine is reliable, they can replace diesel pumps. Remember to budget for the solar panels as well.
- Supply: confirm whether you have single-phase or three-phase power. Some OMAX models list a wide 170–230V range, which helps where voltage drops.
Pump Types and Models Compared
Self-priming: the Waterman Turbo 50 (0.5HP, 14 m rated head), Shakti Eco 0.5 SP (0.5 HP, 30 m rated head), ULTRATEC Mini-50 (0.5 HP, 6–21 m head range) and ULTRATEC 1 HP (6–40 m head range) suit domestic tank filling. The Waterman Force 100 and Power Gold 100 (1HP, 16 m and 22 m rated head) handle taller buildings. For high lift on a single-phase supply, the OMAX Super Suction O-SS-H 1HP lists a 60 m maximum head.
High flow: the OMAX Lalteen centrifugal pumps range from 0.75 HP with a 1″ or 2″ outlet up to 1.5KW models with 3″ and 4″ outlets (rated flow 40–50 m³/h at low head). The Waterman 252MBC2.0 SP (single-phase, 29.4 m³/h) and 33MBC2.0 (three-phase, 33 m³/h) are 2HP monoblock pumps. Shakti 3 HP, 5.5 HP and 7.5 HP three-phase monoblocks cover larger farms and industrial use.
Submersible: Waterman 1HP borewell pumps come in 12-stage and 15-stage versions (the 15-stage lists a 62 m rated head), and the WT18/14/5 is a 5HP three-phase borewell pump. The Waterman 1DHMS 0.5G and 1.0G are open-well submersibles. For solar pumping, there are the Lubi 2 HP and Larens 3 HP solar DC pumps, plus Veikong solar pump controllers (4 kW, 7.5 kW, 15 kW, 18.5 kW and 22 kW) that run AC pumps from solar arrays with MPPT tracking.
What Affects Water Pump Prices
Small domestic self-priming pumps start from Rs. 5,886. The top of the range, up to Rs. 1,57,500, is the large Veikong solar pump controllers for multi-horsepower irrigation systems. The main reasons prices differ are listed below.
- Motor power: 0.5 HP household pumps compared with 5.5–7.5 HP three-phase pumps.
- Pump type: borewell submersibles with many stages cost more than surface pumps of the same horsepower.
- Solar capability: solar DC pumps and MPPT controllers cost more upfront but have no electricity bill. Panels are extra.
- Phase and build: three-phase motors, cast iron bodies and stainless steel parts add cost and durability.
- Stated warranty: many Waterman and Shakti models list 1 year. Check each product's specifications.
Pump Installation and After-Sales Support

For solar pumps, we size the panel array to the pump and controller. We deliver across Nepal and arrange installation outside the Kathmandu Valley by appointment. Warranty follows the terms listed in each product's specifications.
Frequently asked questions
What is the price of a water pump in Nepal?+
At Mega Solar Energy, water pumps and pump controllers range from Rs. 5,886 for a 0.5 HP self-priming pump to Rs. 1,57,500 for a large solar pump controller. Most homes need a 0.5–1 HP self-priming pump. Farms and borewells need larger monoblock, submersible or solar pumps.
Which pump is best for filling an overhead tank in a multi-storey house?+
For most Kathmandu houses, a 0.5–1 HP self-priming pump drawing from an underground tank works well. Allow about 3 metres of head per storey plus pipe losses, then choose a pump whose rated head is above that figure. Taller buildings may need a 1 HP model or a higher-head pump.
When do I need a submersible pump instead of a surface pump?+
Choose a borewell submersible when the water level is too deep for a surface pump to draw it up. The submersible sits inside the bore and pushes water up. Our Waterman borewell models fit 4-inch bores. Share your boring depth and water level so we can match the stages and head.
Is a solar water pump worth it for irrigation in Nepal?+
For farms with good sunshine, especially in the Terai, a solar pump removes diesel and electricity costs. It pumps during daylight, which matches irrigation hours. The upfront cost is higher because you also buy panels and, for AC pumps, a controller. We can size a complete system for your land and water source.
What warranty do your water pumps have?+
Warranty depends on the model and is listed in each product's specifications. Many Waterman and Shakti pumps, including the self-priming, monoblock and borewell models, list 1 year. Confirm the terms for your chosen model at the time of purchase.
How do I make my water pump last longer?+
Never run a surface pump dry, and keep the foot valve and strainer clean. Protect the motor from rain, and use a stabiliser or a pump rated for a wide voltage range where supply fluctuates. A float switch prevents overflow and needless running.
Do you deliver water pumps outside Kathmandu?+
Yes. We deliver pumps across Nepal, including to farms in the Terai and hill districts, and install them outside the valley by appointment. Charges depend on location and pump size, so send us your district and requirement for a quote.
